Ullambana Festival for the Deliverance of Souls

The Ullambana Sutra records that Venerable Maudgalyayana, a disciple of Shakyamuni Buddha, saw through his supernatural powers that his mother was suffering in the realm of hungry ghosts, and he was powerless to help her, which saddened him greatly. Therefore, he asked the Buddha how to liberate his mother from her suffering. The Buddha said: "Your mother's sins are heavy; on the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month, you must prepare a hundred kinds of food and offer it to monks from all directions. Through the immeasurable power of the monks, your mother can be liberated." Therefore, every year in the seventh lunar month, Buddhist temples hold the Ullambana Festival, an important Buddhist festival and also a day for Chinese people to express gratitude and filial piety. Besides offering food to monks, people also perform rituals to liberate the deceased.
