Public Launch: Water-Land Liberation Service Workshop

27 July 2024, 09:30 AM - 27 July 2024, 01:00 PM

About this event

🌟 Join us for the launch of an enlightening workshop series at Poh Ming Tse Temple on the Water-Land Liberation Service (Shuilu Fa Hui 水陸法会)! Delve into the origins, procedures, and significance of this grand ritual in Chinese Buddhism. Explore its historical roots and modern relevance with Prof Liu Jingyu, a distinguished scholar in Buddhist rituals and comparative religious studies (Buddhism and Asian religions). ☸️

The Water-Land Liberation Service, also known as Shuilu Fa Hui (水陸法会), is one of the most elaborate rituals conducted by Chinese Buddhist temples. Widely known as one of the grandest rituals in Chinese Buddhism, the ceremony is attributed to Emperor Wu of Liang (梁武帝) (464–549 CE), the founding emperor of the Liang dynasty in China during the Northern and Southern dynasties period.

The main aims of the ritual is to invite enlightened beings from higher realms to relieve the suffering of the lower realms by offering grand offerings to all beings of the air, water, and land. Codified by the Chan/Zen Buddhist master Bao Zhi (宝志禅师) (418–514 CE), the ritual is believed to offer great merits and blessings to all who participate in it.

What are the origins of the ritual? What are its procedures and practices? What role do non-Buddhist elements play? What is the contemporary relevance and significance of the ritual today? Join us in this workshop to find out more!
