Observing the Eight Precepts & Buddhist Etiquette (Full-Day Retreat)
About this event
What happens when we give ourselves permission to let go of a little?
We spend much of our lives responding to what we want, what we need to do, and what we feel we cannot do without. Rarely do we pause to ask whether every desire needs to be fulfilled, or every impulse acted upon.
The Buddhist practice of observing the Eight Precepts offers an opportunity to explore this question through experience, rather than understanding it only in theory.
For one day, we voluntarily set aside certain worldly comforts and habits, creating space for simplicity, mindfulness and restraint. This is not about punishing ourselves or rejecting the world. It is about discovering that we can choose how we respond to our desires, rather than being led by them.
With fewer distractions, we may begin to notice our habitual reactions more clearly. We may also discover that doing less, consuming less and seeking less can bring a sense of ease that is easily overlooked in our usual routines.
Guided by Venerable Shi Chuan Jia, this one-day retreat introduces participants to the Eight Precepts and Buddhist etiquette through Dharma teachings, guided meditation, sutra recitation, prostrations and quiet reflection.
Whether you are new to the practice or have observed the precepts before, this is an opportunity to step back from familiar habits and experience a day of mindful living.
Sometimes, freedom begins not with having more, but with discovering that we need less.
Join us for the retreat on January 2, or explore our other retreats dates for the first half of 2027 on February 27, April 3, May 1, June 5 and July 3.

About the organiser
We are a contemporary Buddhist community committed to making the Dharma accessible in English. While many Mahāyāna teachings are traditionally shared in Mandarin, our Vihāra offers a space where practitioners can explore Buddhist wisdom in a language that speaks to them. By blending traditional teachings with modern perspectives, we aim to make Buddhist practice both accessible and relevant in today’s world.
At the heart of our community is a shared dedication to learning and practising the Dharma together. We uphold core Buddhist values such as mindfulness, ethical living, and selfless service. Through study, meditation, and compassionate action, we support one another on the path of inner transformation.
