About this event

Abhidharma is often described as one of the most profound yet least understood areas of Buddhist teachings. For many, it can feel distant or too technical. Led by Dr. Lee Foong Ming, this course offers an accessible introduction, with no prior background in Buddhist philosophy required.

Over four sessions, Dr. Lee will explore Abhidharma traditions such as Vibhajyavāda and Sarvāstivāda, along with key ideas from the Madhupiṇḍika Sutta, Dharma Theory, and the Theory of Moment. Participants will also see how these insights influenced later Buddhist thought, including Mahāyāna developments.

Rather than presenting Abhidharma as an abstract theory, this course shows why Buddhists studied it and how it supports learning, reflection, and practice.

By the end of the course, participants may gain a clearer sense of what Abhidharma is, how it arose, and why it remains relevant for Buddhist study and spiritual practice today.

To maintain a meaningful and interactive learning environment, each intake remains intentionally small. This encourages genuine sharing, thoughtful reflection, and personalised guidance throughout the sessions.

🗓 Course Dates: 10, 17, 24, 31 July (Fridays)
📍 Time:  7pm-9pm

About the organiser

Organiser Description
Compassion and Wisdom Vihāra (悲智精舍) was founded as a space for personal growth and learning — a place where individuals can deepen their understanding of the Dharma and integrate compassion and wisdom into their daily lives.

We are a contemporary Buddhist community committed to making the Dharma accessible in English. While many Mahāyāna teachings are traditionally shared in Mandarin, our Vihāra offers a space where practitioners can explore Buddhist wisdom in a language that speaks to them. By blending traditional teachings with modern perspectives, we aim to make Buddhist practice both accessible and relevant in today’s world.

At the heart of our community is a shared dedication to learning and practising the Dharma together. We uphold core Buddhist values such as mindfulness, ethical living, and selfless service. Through study, meditation, and compassionate action, we support one another on the path of inner transformation.
