Venerable Yen Pei’s Philosophy and Practice of Humanistic Buddhism

Venerable Yen Pei (1917–1996) was a pivotal figure in twentieth-century Buddhism and a key advocate of "Humanistic Buddhism" in Singapore.

In this talk, Associate Professor Jack Meng-Tat Chia will examine how Venerable Yen Pei, through Buddhist education and social service, introduced the concept of Humanistic Buddhism to Singapore and adapted it to meet the needs of our local community.

The talk will highlight how Venerable Yen Pei translated the Buddhist ideal of altruistic compassion into concrete actions to benefit the masses in society, by addressing areas such as care for the elderly, sick and needy, family services and dialysis support.
